Take up has 4 different meanings : 

Occupancy 

This bed takes up most of the space of my room.

Begin to do something

She took up playing basketball at the age of ten.

Continue doing something

Take up the task that you left off.

Accept advice

I took up hers suggestion to spend time at the coffee shop which has special decoration at last Saturday afternoon.

Begin to do something - 開始做某件事
